Hawaii Public Library provides free, on-line courses on a variety of subjects

Instructions to Use Gale On-line Courses at Hawaii Public Libraries
1. Obtain a free library card, e.g., from the front desk of the Hilo Public Library (HPL).
2. Log-on to the Hawaii Library website: Hawaii Library
3. There is not an easy link to the Gale Courses from the library main page, here are two ways to get to the Gale page. (1) Once logged-in, go to your browser's URL entry bar at the top of your screen. Type: https://education.gale.com/l-hawaii. This webpage describes the courses by topic. (2) A second method to find the Gale Courses starts from the home-page for the Hawaii State Public Library System. From that webpage, scroll down about one screen and click on the link Search Databases. After a new window opens, scroll down the list of all databases to a link: Gale Courses.
4. Once you are viewing the Gale courses home webpage, click on the course in which you are interested (e.g., Math). When the course's webpage appears, read the Detail and Syllabus sections. Then click Enroll Now.
5. Note the course rules at the bottom of the homepage: You must "attend" a class twice in the first 13 days to remain enrolled.

For English as Second Language (ESL) Learners

Instructions to Use Mango Languages at Hawaii Public Libraries
1. Obtain a free library card, e.g., from the front desk of the Hilo Public Library (HPL).
2. Log-on to the Hawaii Library website: Hawaii Library
3. On the opening page, scroll down about one screen. In the center column is a box entitled: "Mango Languages." Click on this link. (Hint: On the webpage, press the control key (Ctrl) and the 'f' key at the same time. When the search (find) box opens at the bottom of the page, type: Mango The page should then jump to the section you want.)
4. When a new window opens, you will be given two choices: Log-in to the Mango site, or choose Guest Access. As a new visitor to the Mango language site, you may want to click the guest access button.
5. When the Mango languages page opens, click on All languages. Then click on your choice, e.g., Chinese, Mandarin. When the new page is displayed, choose Mango Conversations. A new page will display and load the conversations. To begin hearing and repeating the English conversation with Chinese (or whatever your choice) translation, click on Unit 1, or Take Placement Test. Then, just follow the instructions and choices that follow on subsequent pages.
